Marie-José, born in Ostend in 1906, was the only daughter of King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth. She began her life among the seagulls of Ostend, but Marie-José of Belgium eventually found her place on a very different stage: as the last Queen of Italy.
In 1930, she was arranged to marry the Italian Crown Prince Umberto. In Italy, Marie-José found it difficult to adapt, especially because her father-in-law King Victor Emanuel III allied himself with dictator Mussolini. Nevertheless, this Ostend princess remained true to her principles and actively participated in charitable initiatives.

During World War II, she maintained contacts with resistance groups and took great risks in the hope of bringing peace. After the war, in 1946, she and Umberto were King and Queen of Italy for exactly 33 days. This short period earned her the nickname ‘Regina di maggio’ – the May Queen.
Today, her legacy lives on in the Prix Reine Marie José, a prestigious music prize that keeps the memory of this remarkable Ostend princess alive.
