Willy Bosschem is a creative polymath who has permanently colored the city. His artistic journey began in 1951, during his military service, when he drew caricatures of Ostend politicians for De Zeewacht. Besides being a painter and sculptor, he is the inventor of Smoke Art (1965), a groundbreaking technique where smoke and soot are part of the creative process. His work can be admired all over Ostend, from the impressive Stations of the Cross in the Our Lady Queen Church to his recent project Ensor Fans (2024), a collaboration with 15 artists focusing on connection. Willy’s art is a mix of humor, innovation, and pure beauty, and always tells a story. With his unique approach and continuous inspiration, he remains an icon in the Ostend art world and beyond.
His favorite place in Ostend is the Maria Hendrika Park. Despite the charm of the sea, Willy particularly loves the forest and enjoys spending time in the green nature.
