° 2/04/1939 – † 1/04/1984
On Valentine’s Day 1981, Marvin Gaye arrived in Ostend. What’s going on? A failed marriage, money problems, and a cocaine addiction.
In the city of sea and wind, Gaye rediscovered himself, thanks to the warmth of his friend Freddy Cousaert and his family. He enjoyed walks along the beach, played with children, and found peace in the simple life. Those Ostend vibes worked wonders: they brought him the inspiration for Sexual Healing, a hit that made the world fall in love with Marvin Gaye again.
His album Midnight Love, recorded in Belgium, brought him a Grammy and a glorious comeback. Even the music video for Sexual Healing carries Ostend within it, as it was recorded in the Kursaal.
Although his time here was short, Gaye left an indelible impression. Ostend gave him what he needed: space, tranquility, and a touch of sea magic. Marvin Gaye – a legend who briefly entrusted his soul to the waves.
