° 5/09/1907, Ostend – † 17/09/1999, Uccle
Henri Storck was a Belgian filmmaker and pioneer of documentary film. In 1928, he founded the Ostend Film Club and made both social documentaries and art films. His most famous work, Misère au Borinage (1933), exposed the appalling living conditions of miners. Storck also immortalized artists such as James Ensor, Rubens, and Permeke. Besides being a filmmaker, he was an organizer: he established the Belgian Documentary School and was co-founder of the International Association of Documentary Filmmakers. With nearly 100 films to his name, he remains an icon who inspires generations of filmmakers.
