° 26/07/1829 – † 6/10/1912
Auguste Beernaert, born in Ostend in 1829, was a Belgian politician and the 9th Prime Minister of Belgium.
He is best known for his diplomatic work in international relations and his commitment to peace. Beernaert played a crucial role in establishing the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, for which he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1909. His political career was characterized by his emphasis on diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution.
As a proud Ostend native, he always remained connected to his birthplace, which inspired and supported him throughout his career. On the Marie Joséplein in Ostend, a bust of Auguste Beernaert, designed by sculptor Louis Mascré, has stood since 1927 as a lasting tribute to this peacemaker.
