Angèle ‘Gella’ Allaert, born in 1910 on the coast of Ostend, was a woman of many talents: harpist, actress, and theater pioneer. After a flying start as a harpist in the Kursaal orchestra, she conquered the Flemish theater world, with starring roles in the KVS in Brussels and the KNS in Antwerp. Her versatility took her from tragedy to comedy, always with a unique flair.
Later, Gella also shone on screen, with appearances in Wij, Heren van Zichem and other classics. And as if that wasn’t enough, she also founded her own drama school, inspiring a new generation of actors. Her son and renowned actor Frank Aendenboom was undoubtedly also inspired by his mother.
In 2002, at the age of 91, Gella symbolically returned to her roots: her ashes still season the waves of the North Sea today. A fitting farewell for a woman who always carried her city in her heart. Her legacy? It still ripples through the Flemish theater landscape and the soul of Ostend.
